Your Guide to Preparing for Hurricane Season

Although For Lauderdale is a beautiful place to live most of the year, hurricane season can be a very stressful time for homeowners. Preparing your roof for hurricane season ahead of time can minimize roofing damage and damage to the rest of your home. Here are four ways a roofing contractor can help you prepare for hurricane season.

Damaged Roof Shingles Repair

  • Reinforced Trusses

Trusses are the beams that run diagonally from the edge of your home up towards the ridge. These beams are typically strong enough to endure most serious storms, but hurricanes can make short work of them in just a few moments. Your roofing contractor can reinforce your trusses by installing truss bracing along the length of your roof. This will give your roof the strength it needs to withstand high winds.

  • Hurricane Straps

Another simple solution to minimize hurricane damage is the installation of hurricane straps. These straps connect your roof’s trusses directly to nearby wall studs and wall top plates. This prevents your entire roof structure from getting blown off at once since your wall studs are firmly attached to your home’s foundation.

  • Gable End Bracing

Gable roofs are very common in Fort Lauderdale, but are not really strong enough to withstand hurricane-force winds. Some of the most vulnerable parts of your gable roof are the flat vertical ends. Gable ends should also be secured to the ridge and base of your roof structure to prevent being blown off during a hurricane.

  • Hurricane-Rated Roofing

Finally, make sure that your roof is covered with shingles that are rated to withstand hurricane-force winds. These shingles will provide optimal protection from rain infiltration and will also be resistant to getting blown off in the storm.

Local 10's Jen Herrera Helps a Woman Keep Her Insurance

A local woman received a letter from her homeowners insurance saying that if she didn't get her roof replaced that she would lose her insurance. Citizens Property Insurance told her that her roof was more than 25 years old but the homeowner had her roof replaced only 16 years ago. She contacted Local 10 and they decided to do a story on it.

Paul Bange Roofing was called out to perform an inspection to see if her roof was still in proper condition. All the homeowner really needs to do is turn in the paperwork from the roofing company that performed the inspection and also send 2 pictures of the roof to the insurance company. Unfortunately, the average homeowner does not know that these are the simple steps they need to take to keep their insurance in the long run.

To see the whole story, please visit Local 10 News online. Paul Bange Roofing knows how difficult it can be to deal with your insurance companies at times like this. Call us today at (954) 981-7663 to schedule your roof inspection.

Preventative Maintenance That Will Help Extend the Life of Your Roof

Installing a roof on your home is a very serious home investment. Although hiring a great roofing contractor to install your roof correctly is a good start, it may not be enough to ensure that your roof stays in good condition throughout its projected lifespan and beyond. Preventative roofing maintenance can protect your well-installed roof from untimely and unexpected failure. Here are some basic preventative roofing maintenance steps to take:

Inspect Your Roof Annually

At the very least, make sure that you have your roof inspected by a roofing professional once a year. Professionals are trained to identify potential roofing problems before they require serious repairs. This can help you save money on repairs, as well as help maintain a more protective, stable roof. Examples of problems your roofing contractor will look out for include missing or damaged tiles, damaged flashing, and failing nails.

Clean Your Gutters

Your gutters help to direct water away from the perimeter of your home, which is important to avoiding foundation damage down the road. When gutters are filled with debris, they can become clogged with leaves or weighed down with water. This extra weight puts a lot of stress on your roof’s fascia board, which can become damaged and eventually lead to rotting, mold growth, and falling gutters.

Remove Algae and Moss

Finally, make sure that you deal with algae and moss growth as soon as possible. These organisms may seem harmless, but they can actually eat away at your roofing material and encourage water infiltration. Use special algae and moss removers to kill any present growth, and then install copper strips or ridge caps to prevent future moss growth.
